2009 6th Annual

OPENING CEREMONIES:   Another year and the players, volunteers and spectators were ready to play ball, have fun, and raise money for the RACH Fund.  Happily, Dan O’Neill acted as MC for this year’s Tournament, proudly announcing that as a community of RACH Fund supporters, we had raised over $300,000 for PMH Research!  It was lovely and emotional to watch as Margaret O’Neill threw the opening pitch to her husband, Hughie O’Neill (grandparents of Rachel).   “There isn’t a word to describe it,” said Margaret, of the much-anticipated weekend, which is a bittersweet homecoming for many Parry Sounders. “The people in the community work so hard to keep the tournament going,” she said.

WEEKEND ACTIVITIES:   Once again the Tournament weekend did not disappoint – 3 days of 3-Pitch Baseball with 32 teams, including a Friday night Fish Fry, two nights of live entertainment, the ever-popular Silent Auction, BBQ/Concession, Fireworks and the Beer Tent kept the players and spectators busy and happy!

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT IN BEER TENT:  Friday Night – the Brian Burn band entertained the crowd and on Saturday night – The Dirty Little Swing Thing had everyone kicking up their heels!

SPECIAL NOTES:   Thankfully the all-day rain on Saturday did not dampen the spirits of everyone who attended!  The ball continued, as did all of the other annual events.  There was a special presentation as well by Dr. Jonathan Irish from PMH.  A crowd of over 300 people listened as he described how the monies raised through the RACH Fund were aiding his research team of 20 who are researching ‘real-time’ technologies that allow the surgeon to pinpoint cancer cells and tumours and remove them from the body without harming the surrounding tissue.  2009-Dr.-Irish-PresentationHis slideshow presentation had everyone listening quietly, as the rain pelted down on the roof of the Kinsmen Park Arena. This informative and inspiring presentation reminded us all of why we were committed to ensuring the RACH Fund and the Tournaments continue!

This year, the Spirit Award – Presented to a Person Who Exemplifies the Spirit of Rachel Higgins – was given to Anthony Maschek. 2009-Spirit-Award-Recipient-Anthony-Maschek
