2013 10th Annual

Our Goal was to Raise $90,000 for the 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RACH 3-PITCH TOURNAMENT… or more through the RACH Fund in 2013!

OVER $91,000 RAISED

OPENING CEREMONIES:  The 10th Annual RACH Tournament opened with the MC, Dan O’Neill (Rachel’s uncle) welcoming everyone to ‘the little tournament chat could…a Decade Strong and looking marvelous’!  He quoted from Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world.  Indeed it is the only thing that ever has” and expressed that the supporters and everyone attending is just that group!  He thanked the 416 ball players, 550 participants, 215 volunteers, for making a difference and changing the world. He also made a point to thank the volunteers, many of whom have been with the tournament from the start.  The dedicated support generates results, like the fact that we have collectively raised over $620K including $42K before the tournament even started!  He then invited Kelly Dickinson, our friend and rep from PMCF to say a few words.  Kelly thanked the RACH Fund for the contributions to PMCF and Dr. Irish and confirmed the value in what we do.  Dan also noted that Dr. Irish was attending the tournament this year, with his team TEAM GTx, and that he would be making a presentation on Saturday at 5:20, so Dan asked everyone to put that on their calendars!

Dan reflected that we come together every year to raise the kind of money that we have to find a cure so we can spend more time with family and friends that are battling cancer.  He remembered an important friend and volunteer who had passed away suddenly before the Tournament.  Our ‘IT’ guy.  John Cussons helped guide the RACH Fund’s efforts on our website, social media and setting up a very cool mobile agenda, that he had received an award for!  John had a vision that we could take RACH international by leveraging the internet and social media.  This year John would have been proud, because in fact we did.  We received our first international donation all the way from Switzerland.  We then shared a moment of silence to remember the family and friends that were not able to celebrate this weekend with us.

Dan then introduced the Higgins family for a rendition of Gone, Gone, Gone by Phillip Phillips.  Mary Bishop, Rachel’s Aunt, fell in love with the song and re-wrote some of the lyrics to capture this 10th Anniversary Celebration.  Everyone enjoyed the rendition!

The Parry Sound Dance Academy was then introduced.

To round out the Opening Ceremonies, Riley Thomas, a student from St. Peter’s sang Oh Canada, then Toby Scott who has played ball at all 10 Tournaments, officially kicked off the tournament by throwing the Opening Pitch!  Dan closed the Opening Ceremonies by signing off with John Cussons favourite saying “Be Awesome” – and reminding everyone to “Let’s Be Awesome this weekend, Have some fun and raise some money. Cancer Can Be Beaten!”

WEEKEND ACTIVITIES:    The 3 day event of course included 3-Pitch Baseball with 32 teams, a Friday night Fish Fry, two nights of live entertainment, the ever-popular Silent Auction, Raffles, BBQ/Concession, Fireworks and the Beer Tent! The 3-Pitch Baseball started Friday night and went through to the Championship game on Sunday morning.  Congratulations to ‘Whatever Dee’ for winning the trophy!

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT IN BEER TENT:  Friday Night the crowd danced the night away to the returning The Travelling Beer Bellies  Then on Saturday night The Lost Faculties returned to entertain the crowd to everyone’s enjoyment!
