2014 11th Annual

OPENING CEREMONIES:  The opening ceremonies to kick-off the 11th Anniversary of the RACH 3-Pitch Tournament continued the tradition of approximately 400 supporters enjoying the amazing pickerel fish fry while being entertained by a local dance troupe dancing to Pharrell William’s “Happy” song.  Watch the video, which reflects some of the highlights of the opening ceremonies and the weekend, including Adam, Elizabeth and Rachel Higgins throwing the opening pitch!

2014 RACH Opening

Dan O’Neill (Rachel’s Uncle) once again took on the role of MC to keep the ‘ball’ rolling regarding opening ceremonies and the weekend activities, and also reminded everyone why their support was so important to continue to raise the necessary funds to support the research of Dr. Jonathan Irish and his team at PMCF.  At this time Dan introduced our PMCF representative, Kelly Dickinson, who shared how important our fundraising was to PMCF and the research of Dr. Jonathan Irish, and she was happy to announce that Dr. Irish’s Team GTX was back to play ball this year!

Before the doors opened for this Tournament, money had been raised through donations and online pledges once again.  Dan recognized the efforts of 16 participants in the Tournament who had each raised over $500 and a grand total of just over $12,000 combined!  Each of these participants received the incentive prize of a RACH Hoodie!

Dan also introduced Adam and Elizabeth Higgins and their darling daughter Rachel to throw the opening pitch and a local school choir sang Oh Canada to officially begin the Tournament.

WEEKEND ACTIVITIES:    The 3 day event of course included 3-Pitch Baseball with 32 teams, including a Friday night Fish Fry, two nights of live entertainment, the ever-popular Silent Auction, BBQ/Concession, Fireworks and the Beer Tent!

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT IN BEER TENT:  Our live entertainment was fantastic once again – with the crowd enjoying both evenings and dancing until the end of the evenings!

Many Colours of Cancer Bracelet:

RACH Bracelet

Cate Schenk, a friend from Muskoka whose daughter is a brain cancer survivor, sold a beautiful ‘Colours of Cancer’ bracelet with an ‘R’ and cancer ribbon charm on the clasp. Cate gave back to the RACH Tournament by sharing half of her profit ~ Thank you Cate!

Winning TEAMS:

Due to a new format where there would be no ball played on Sunday and the majority of the teams were required to play on Friday night; therefore we had two winning teams ~Congratulations to the Benchwarmers & Jeters Never Prosper!

2014 RACH Winning Teams

By the end of the weekend, and with all previous donations, we are excited to share that we raised close to $70,000 and a GRAND TOTAL OF almost $705,000 raised since 2004!!  As in past years, we were also proud to have given back to the Parry Sound Community as well with $2,400 donated in 2014 to WPSHC*

On a sad note:

In 2014 two of our long time supporters passed away:

Thank you Jack Lawson; It is with regret that we share with you that Jack Lawson, one of the RACH Tournaments long time amazing supporters and sponsors, passed away last evening.  Jack and his wife Sherri own Muskoka Embroidery and from the very beginning of the Tournament, Jack and Sherri made many of the Team jerseys, engraved the beautiful and inspirational Spirit Awards out of Georgian Bay Rock, and arranged for all of the RACH merchandise.  Jack even did radio ads as he believed in our vision.  Jack was a patient of Dr. Irish and thought highly of him.  Jack will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all of us at the RACH Fund.

Thank you Connie Cussons; On behalf of the RACH Fund we say goodbye to our oldest supporter, Connie Cussons – 94 years young!  Connie gained great strength from Rachel and lived her life fully.  She was honoured to make pies for the Fish Fry event and loved to be at the field to cheer on her favourite Teams!  In 2011 Connie was humbled by receiving the RACH Spirit Award and cherished it every day since!  Connie was an extended member of the Higgins family and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
